“…everywhere I look around. Love is in the air, every sight and every sound.”
It is almost spring! The flowers are blossoming, the birds are chirping, the sun is shining longer. It’s time to get out, fill your lungs with fresh rose-scented air, and scream, “What a beautiful world!!”. Spring, the season of optimism, of plentiful, of youth, of colours, of love. We live in a lucky country, a land abounds in nature’s gifts, of beauty, rich, and rare. The huge majority of us will readily agree to that. When you are happy, everything is beautiful. Be kind to people, smile and feel better yourself, and possibly, just possible, make somebody else’s life better. Spread the love. I smile to people on the streets all the time, most would smile back and say hello. Some would ignore me with the straightest of face, but so what? The smile did not cost me anything and maybe I have shown them that it is possible to be nice with no effort and maybe next time they will smile back. Even in this day and age, when our leaders actively lied to us in order to go to war (Remember Iraq? And I am being generous here, that is the most recent war that all parties have agreed that was started based on falsehood, there were countless others), we are still looking for foreign scapegoats for all our problems while we forgave those leaders who deceived us in the first place instantly. Even just this week, one of our leaders, someone we picked to put into Parliament to lead us, told us to hate a whole section of the community from his seat of power in the house of power of the nation. Late last year, Australians went to the poll in a referendum for love. Wait, that was not even a referendum, it was a plebiscite, meaning a non-binding referendum. Meaning if 50.1% of the voters had voted against allowing same-sex marriage, the matter would have been decided, done and dusted, book closed, please don’t mention THAT topic again for a decade or so. But if the voters had voted 99.9% in favour, then the matter would have gone to our dear leaders to decide. Why did we need a sit-on-the-fence referendum to decide on love, but no one ever asked us when we went to war? Such is the world we live in, such is the way of our lucky country. The world needs more love, more tolerance, more understanding. When we show love we can only spread love. Sometimes our kindness is not returned, but so what? You do not expect a return from those you are genuinely kind to. Your return is feeling good about yourself. Spread love and the love will spread on its own and it will eventually return. Likewise with hate. I know which one I want to eventually return to me. So, remember, spring is coming, everything is beautiful, it is so effortless to spread love. Smile to the people you pass on the streets. Even if a few of them think you look like a grinning idiot, at least you are a HAPPY idiot!
